Memories of Barbara

As a small girl I thought Auntie Barbara was the epitome of cool. With her gorgeous clothes and jewellery, her incredible swivel orange chairs [it was the 60s!] and her penchant for going off on lovely holidays she was a bright light in an often dull world.

But much more than that she was the kindest, most tolerant, least judgmental and probably the most cheerful of all my relatives. She also had a wicked sense of humour!

Even as her health deteriorated and she became more and more housebound she was always ready with a smile and a never waning interest in, and concern for, other people and the outside world.

It was the hardest thing to accept that I couldn’t be there to hold her hand as she left us and I will so miss her conversation, her understanding, her laughter and her love.

Rest in peace Auntie Barbara
All our love
Amanda and John xxx

The following is a poem I would have liked to read at her funeral service as it seems so fitting:
Remember Me by Anthony Dowson

Speak of me as you have always done.
Remember the good times, laughter, and fun.
Share the happy memories we’ve made.
Do not let them wither or fade.
I’ll be with you in the summer’s sun
And when the winter’s chill has come.
I’ll be the voice that whispers in the breeze.
I’m peaceful now, put your mind at ease.
I’ve rested my eyes and gone to sleep,
But memories we’ve shared are yours to keep.
Sometimes our final days may be a test,
But remember me when I was at my best.
Although things may not be the same,
Don’t be afraid to use my name.
Let your sorrow last for just a while.
Comfort each other and try to smile.
I’ve lived a life filled with joy and fun.
Live on now, make me proud of what you’ll become.
