THE PARISH OF BERKSWICH
The Ecclesiastical Parish of Berkswich is
situated about 4KM E.S.E. of Stafford and possesses three churches, the parish
church of the Holy Trinity which is in Baswich, the church of St Thomas which is
in Walton and the church of All Saints which is in Brocton.
The only public burial ground in the parish is at Holy Trinity. Whilst the
ground at St Thomas' is consecrated for burials the only family interred there
are the Levett's of Milford Hall.
The parish church is of very old foundation, there is mention of a priest in the
Domesday Book and some of the oldest stone in the church is reputed to be of
Saxon origin. The oldest burial recorded in the register is dated 1602 but there
were, no doubt, many burials previous to this date. It is known that there were
many burials within the church, the only ones actually recorded are listed in
this document.
Also listed here are the memorials inside St Thomas' church and the Parish Rolls
of Honour.
A total of 533 monuments externally have been read and indexed. Some monuments
are unreadable and many are buried beneath the grass. Whilst the churchyard is
still used for burials the listing has, for many reasons, been terminated around
1960.
This indexing was carried out as a Summer Workshop during August 1991 by a
dedicated team of young people supervised by adults who were responsible for
checking and cross checking the entries.
I am deeply grateful for their hard work and dedication and hope that the final
result will be a worthy addition to the ever growing list of monuments which are
being recorded for posterity.
